The Ref
This dark comedy stars Denis Leary as a burglar holding a super-dysfunctional family (headed by Kevin Spacey) hostage on Christmas Eve.
It's sure to make you feel better about spending time with your own family this Christmas.
Lethal Weapon
It's easy to forget that Richard Donner's classic action film is set at Christmastime. And it's easy to forget that it's Christmastime when you get to watch Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Murtaugh (Danny Glover) track down drug smugglers and blow shit up.
Mixed Nuts
Nora Ephron (Sleepless in Seattle) wrote the screenplay and directed this idiosyncratic, yet sweet, comedy about a busy night at one of those hotline call centers during the holidays.
An undervalued movie with a great ensemble cast featuring: Steve Martin, Rita Wilson, Madeline Kahn, Rob Reiner, Jon Stewart, Liev Schreiber, Anthony LaPaglia, Steven Wright, Robert Klein, Joely Fischer, Juliette Lewis, and a young Adam Sandler.
3 Godfathers
This one is a perfect excuse to watch a Western at Christmas. It's also one of John Wayne's best performances as one of three outlaw fugitives who promise a dying woman that they will care for her newborn baby.
If the kids liked Ice Age, you can bet they'll find the plot of this classic very familiar.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Written by Shane Black (He also wrote Lethal Weapon) Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang is a lot of fun to watch. One of Robert Downey, Jr.'s best performances, to date, as a thief-turned-actor caught up in a murder investigation in L.A.
Val Kilmer and Michelle Monaghan are phenomenal in supporting roles in this great Noir-ish, action-comedy.
Trapped in Paradise
Nicolas Cage, John Lovtiz, and Dana Carvey are three bank-robbing brothers who find an easy score in a smalltown.
Until a snowstorm traps them in the town and they discover the townspeople are so nice that the sibling crooks begin to grow consciences-- very Grinchy!
Trading Places
The lives of Stockbroker, Louis Winthorpe III (Dan Ankroyd) and homeless con-man, Billy Ray Valentine (Eddie Murphy) are swapped during the holidays thanks to a $1 bet between billionaire brothers.
The unlikely duo team up, with the aid of their butler (Denholm Elliot) and a hooker (Jamie Lee Curtis), to turn the tables on the devious Dukes in this hilarious comedy.
Go
Doug Liman's underrated 1999 film is another installment with a great ensemble cast: (Timothy Olyphant, Taye Diggs, Katie Holmes, Sarah Polley, Breckin Meyer, Desmond Askew, Scott Wolf, Jay Mohr, and Jane Krakowski.)
Much like Pulp Fiction, there are three separate storylines that interweave: a trip to Vegas, a Christmas Eve rave, and a botched drug deal. All centered around a group of grocery store clerks in L.A. on Christmas Eve
Another fun movie to watch!
Gremlins
The classic 80's flick (Written by Home Alone director, Chris Columbus) about a teenager who fails to obey the rules (no water, no food after midnight, and no bright lights) that came with his new pet mogwai, that was a Christmas present he received from his travelling businessman father.
Chaos ensues as the cute, Gizmo unwittingly creates a horde of mischievous monsters who ravage the town.
We're No Angels
Humphrey Bogart takes a comedic turn as one of three prisoners on the run who encounter a family on Christmas night who makes them reconsider their ways.
Die Hard
Arguably the best action film of all-time. Bruce Willis best outing as NYC cop, John McClane.
He has to stop a group of "terrorists" led by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) who crash McClane's estranged wife's company Christmas party in an L.A. high rise.
Yet, another excuse to watch a great action movie during the holiday season... Yippee ki-yay!
Edward Scissorhands
Thinking about Tim Burton at Christmastime may bring to mind A Nightmare Before Christmas or even Batman Returns, but this classic is the first, and best, Tim Burton/Johnny Depp collaboration.
Johnny Depp, with scissors for hands and The Cure's, Robert Smith's hairdo, delivers a landmark performance that turned him from teen heartthrob to acting phenom.
Remember, the story is told by an elderly, Kim (Winona Ryder) explaining where snow comes from to her young granddaughter on a winter's night.
This classic is sure to melt even the coldest of hearts.
